The choice of glue plays a crucial role in the woodworking industry, particularly in attaching veneer to MDF or plywood. Opting for the right type of adhesive is essential to ensure a strong and durable bond.

Veneer glue is used to attach a thin layer, usually with a thickness of 0.6-mm up to 1 mm of veneer on chipboard, MDF, or plywood to enhance its aesthetic appeal. Polyvinyl acetate (PVA) glue and urea formaldehyde (UF) glue are two commonly used types of veneer glues.

PVA glue is a highly versatile adhesive that can be used for pressing veneer onto MDF or plywood using either hot or cold presses. The glue is applied onto the panel using a roller, either manually or with a machine, before the veneer is carefully positioned onto the glued surface.

Once the veneer is in place, pressure is applied using a press, ensuring that the glue makes full contact with the substrate. Once the glue has dried completely, the veneered surface can be sanded and finished to perfection.

There are various types of PVA glues available for this application, but the optimal choice is a product like Nunivil 1006, specifically formulated for veneering to avoid problems of oozing.

UF glue is a well-known adhesive used for veneering. It is a thermosetting resin created by combining urea and formaldehyde. To activate the adhesive, two parts of resin are mixed with one part of water.

UF glue is widely used for veneering due to its high bonding strength. The production process typically involves the use of a hot press. It has excellent heat resistance and is commonly used in high-temperature applications.

However, in recent years, there has been a decrease in its usage due to the growing demand for eco-friendly furniture.

Unicol adhesives’ range includes glues that are suitable for producing panels in E1 class that can satisfy emission requirement to EN 13986, as Resina 444. In order to get E1 class, the glue quantity should not exceed 100 grams per square metre.
