Forestry Innovation Investment (FII), widely known as Canadian Wood in India, is a crown corporation of the Government of British Columbia, Canada’s westernmost province. It promotes sustainable wood products and technologies in offshore markets while providing technical support for eco-friendly projects.
Committed to sustainability, Canadian Wood champions the use of environmentally friendly materials and green building practices. It hosts seminars and workshops to educate architects, designers, builders, developers, and project managers on best practices in manufacturing, certification, sustainability, and legality of imported wood. These sessions help professionals select the right species and grades for specific applications.
Canadian Wood products are certified by global audit bodies such as PEFC and FSC, reinforcing Canada’s commitment to responsible forestry. These certifications enhance brand trust, appeal to environmentally conscious manufacturers and consumers, and encourage responsible consumption to ensure sustainable wood availability.
Canadian Wood consists of five distinct species – Western Hemlock, Douglas-fir, Yellow Cedar, Western Red Cedar, and SPF (Spruce-Pine-Fir) – each suited for various remanufacturing and structural applications.
Western Hemlock: Renowned for its fine texture and uniform grain, kiln-seasoned Western Hemlock resists decay and offers stability and strength. It is ideal for furniture, interior fit-outs, mouldings, and general construction due to its excellent machining properties.
Douglas-fir: The species is globally recognized for its high strength-to-weight ratio, making it a top choice for heavy structural applications like post-and-beam construction, glulam beams, roofing, doors, and millwork where both durability and aesthetics matter.
Yellow Cedar: Naturally durable and resistant to elements and insects, Yellow Cedar is used in marine applications, shingles, and decorative paneling. Its structural grades suit outdoor applications such as doors, windows, furniture, pergolas, cladding, decking, and landscaping.
Western Red Cedar: The lightest naturally durable wood, Western Red Cedar is highly resistant to rot, termites, and decay. It is perfect for exterior applications like shingles, siding, decking, pergolas, and greenhouses. Its rich colour and soft texture also make it ideal for interior panelling, furniture, and cabinetry.
SPF (Spruce-Pine-Fir): SPF is a combination of Engelmann Spruce, Lodgepole Pine, and Subalpine Fir, known for its high strength-to-weight ratio and dimensional stability. Predominantly used for framing and construction, it is also popular for furniture, packaging, crating, and pelleting.
All Canadian wood species are legally harvested from sustainably managed forests, certified by international standards. The Canadian forestry industry plants three times more trees than it harvests annually, ensuring long-term sustainability despite being a leading softwood lumber exporter.
Canadian Wood will be participating in IndiaWood 2025, where Canadian suppliers from British Columbia will be present to engage with Indian buyers.
