10 years on D&M eyes overseas markets

Nestled at the foothills of the Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu, close to the bustling industrial city of Coimbatore, is Doors & More (D&M), one of the largest manufacturers of door-sets in South India.

: D&M’s motto, ‘Conserving Nature through Technology’, prods it to innovate and achieve higher environmental standards.

According to Mr. Joshua John, the Managing Director, the location was chosen because the humidity levels in the region were ideal for woodworking and also because of its proximity to the three major markets of Kochi, Bengaluru and Chennai.

The doors unit was set up in 2008, based on the experience garnered in rubber wood processing for over 15 years. A second unit was subsequently started in Bengaluru. Today, D&M has evolved into a manufacturer, and installer of a wide range of door-sets that include solid wood doors, veneered composite flush doors, moulded panel doors, solid wood and profile-wrapped frames and matching architraves.

All its products are manufactured in D&M’s state-of-the-art factories using a wide variety of timber species like Beech, Spruce, Pine, Teak, Ash, Rubber wood, and an extensive range of veneers and laminates.

Most of the timber is sourced directly from mills and factories in Europe, Africa and North America. The timber itself is procured from sustainably maintained forests, kiln-dried and cut to the size and quality specified by the company.

D&M’s motto, ‘Conserving Nature through Technology’, encapsulates its vision of innovation to achieve ever higher environmental standards. The company’s R&D is geared towards new product development and increased production efficiencies.

Product range

“Selection of doors should be based on the overall aesthetics of the home,” says Joshua. “The main entrance door could be in solid hardwood, internal doors in either veneered or laminated flush construction. Another popular selection could be from the moulded skin door range.”

Keeping this in mind, the company offers a wide range of elegant solid wood doors with designs especially suited for entrances. Timber species sourced from around the world give the customer an attractive palette to choose from, while dimensional stability and strength are ensured by using the latest advancements in wood production technology.

The door shutters are manufactured using finger-jointed and edge-laminated lamellas and can be finished in a wide selection of natural or solid hues. In addition, D&M imports Italian door-set components, which are then domestically sized, pressed and assembled to allow for ease of installations, keeping in mind the peculiarities found in Indian construction and site conditions.

The internal construction of all flush doors includes superior grade imported Spruce/Pine for the rails and stiles. A choice of infill – such as tubular chip board, block board or solid particle board – is used to meet specific criteria such as acoustics, fire resistance and weight.

Veneered flush doors are available in an expansive range of grains, texture and colours. Melamine doors are manufactured using continuously pressed laminated (CPL) technology, where a plastic-type resin is used throughout the construction process to add durability and stability to the laminated core.

Door frames

Door frames are supplied in a choice of solid wood or as profile-wrapped over block board. These can either be supplied separately or as door sets along with shutters. The door frames supplied are adjustable to fit any width of wall and suitable for fitting any stile width of the door. These frames are available in different cross sections.

Block board profile wrapped frames match the laminated shutter along with the architrave to form a complete door set with modern design elements. The latest technology in profile wrapping over engineered block board is deployed in its manufacture.

Architraves are supplied in a choice of solid wood or as plywood profile, and are available in a wide range of designs and materials to suit any traditional or modern contemporary architectural style.

Installation is done using anchor fasteners and polyurethane foam fixing technology. The main advantage here is that the factory-finished door sets can be installed after plastering and one coat of paint is done.

Growth plans

D&M today works with some of India’s most progressive architects and builders across South India. From large residential tower blocks, townships and villas, D&M has established itself as a reliable partner to all its clients, having manufactured and installed over half a million door-sets over the years. And more importantly, these door-sets were delivered on time, every time.

With a combined installed capacity of 8,000 door sets per month, the company is currently achieving a capacity utilisation of around 70%. So far it has remained primarily in the institutional residential projects segment.

This year, D&M is poised to launch a retail sales campaign of a select range of doors through a network of experience centres. D&M has also opened a marketing office in Abu Dhabi to cater to the West Asian markets for solid timber doors.
